Learn to Overcome Your Fear of Flying

Are you afraid of flying to the extent of having to make travel changes that involve alternative means of transportation? You are not alone. The good news is that you can discover a treatment for your fear of flying.
The Fear Explained
Some people feel uncomfortable about flying, while still being capable of doing it. Others go in a complete panic mode that makes a flight a 100 percent impossible scenario.
The fear will produce both emotional and physiological effects. Apart from causing anxiety, it will result in excessive sweating, fast heartbeat, dryness in the mouth and even hyperventilation.
Some of the most common symptoms of fear of flying include:
- Excessive fear or panic connected to the specific noises an airplane makes
- Flushing and disorientation
- Gastrointestinal problems that occur before a flight
- Narrowed perception and poor judgement
- Weakness, dizziness and claustrophobic sensations in an airplane
- Heavy breathing and muscle tension
Causes
Many people that have a fear of flying or aerophobia find themselves incapable of pinpointing when or how the fear occurred for the first time. Still, it is a good idea to go down memory lane and to try to pinpoint an incident or a specific event that unlocked the phobia.
Even if you fail finding the exact cause, you will be capable of treating the issue. Most often, the fear of flying is irrational. It could be your imagination or your concern for personal safety that is blown out of proportion.
The fear of letting somebody else control the situation - the pilot being this person in the case of aerophobia - can easily be the cause of the problem.
Claustrophobia, the fear of confined spaces, can aggravate the problem. When flying, you will have to spend a significant amount of time in the tight airplane space. In this instance, you are suffering from a different kind of fear but it will translate to the process of flying.
Best Ways of Overcoming it
All phobias can be treated. The first and easiest thing you can do is the practice of self-help and relaxation techniques before a flight. You will simply have to:
- Take deep breaths and calm yourself down in the days before the flight.
- Learn how to meditate in an attempt to clear your mind from the troublesome thoughts.
- Visualization is another great idea. Try to see yourself on a plane and try to get as comfortable with the situation, as possible.
Keeping yourself occupied during the flight will help you relax a bit, as well. You will need magazines, an interesting book or a music player. Managing to fall asleep during the flight can be a challenge, but it will also help you cope with the fear.
When it comes to irrational fears, hypnotherapy is one of the best possibilities. Phobias are difficult to control because they take place on the subconscious level. Willpower will be inefficient in such situations.
Hypnotherapy consists of several sessions, during which you will focus on stress management and the formation of new subconscious perceptions that will keep the phobia under check. Think of it this way - hypnosis does subconscious "re-programming" that helps you avoid the trigger of the fear and enjoy a fear-free lifestyle.
